On 9 December, Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group’s social media will become silent from 6pm as they join guests and participants for a night of restorative peace and digital detox.

In a world in which we’re assailed on all sides by emails, texts, phone calls, social media updates and notifications, silence is coveted like never before, hence the boom in monastic-style retreats, silent discos, and even silent fireworks. And when all those flashing and beeping distractions become too much, you’ll be craving something very much like the spas at the Mandarin Oriental hotels, the ideal respite to escape from this noisesome modern living.

Six years into their #MOsilentnight global initiative, promoting silence, rest and mindfulness, the Mandarin Oriental Group once again is encouraging its guests all over the globe to disconnect and unplug: to take some much-needed timeout for a spot of soundless mediation and reduce the world outside to a whisper.

This December 9th, in the dying days of the one of the most disruptive years we’ve ever known, Mandarin Oriental hotels are offering a series of wellness activities in the run-up to Silent Night (aka Christmas Eve). “During this time of unparalleled stress and anxiety, we want to create a space where people can press the pause button and have some time to think, meditate or just take a break from being inundated with noise,” says Jeremy McCarthy, Group Director of Spa & Wellness.

The evening kicks off (gently) with a temporary shutdown of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group’s social media accounts, as its guests take a simultaneous digital detox, all around the world. While talking and music will also cease within the spas at 5pm, to instil a sense of calm.

In London, the hotel chain will be making use of its proximity to Hyde Park, offering guests 60 minutes of outdoor personal training from a British Military Fitness trainer, followed by another hour of relaxing Aromatherapy Associates Forest Therapy Massage.

Meanwhile, at the Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong, guests will receive traditional Chinese medicine to boost immunity, including guided breathing, crystal healing, a soothing Singing Bowl ceremony and a dry Chinese meridian massage using Chinese Rose Quartz, known for its healing properties. It all apparently does wonders in balancing your Chakras.

At the Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Dubai, there’s something of a Reset going on: via a one day or three-day programme, created to relieve tension and anxiety, the spa is offering specialised Prayanama breathwork, restful Sleep Support treatment, guided meditation and yoga – all rounded off with a nutritional consultation and plant-based lunch.

While over at the Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo, they’re offering a 75-minute body treatment focusing on the upper body using Aromatherapy Associates Breathe Body oil, made with Eucalyptus, Pine and Tea Tree, which contains natural anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. Guests will also receive a gift of the Breathe Body Oil to take home. There are also scheduled Silent Night activities at Mandarin Oriental Prague, Bangkok, Jakarta, Beijing, Paris, Miami and Canouan – as well as singing bowl therapies in Guangzhou, Taipei and Singapore.
Pure, dreamy, global bliss.
