Intrepid Travel opens new office in Copenhagen

Intrepid Travel has proven that adventure and responsibility can go hand in hand. Now, it’s expanding into Northern Europe with a new base in Copenhagen – set to deliver even more culture-rich, eco-conscious experiences

If it were once a niche concept, sustainable travel is now shaping the future of tourism. Some 70% of travellers now want to minimise their environmental impact, through such excellent measures as carbon-neutral flights, slow travel and responsible, regenerative tourism.

And for over 30 years, the travel company Intrepid Travel has been leading the way. While creating meaningful, immersive experiences, it has also given back to the people and places it promotes. As a certified B Corporation (those companies who demonstrably balance profit with purpose), it has tirelessly championed sustainability and ethical tourism.

Among its achievements, it set industry benchmarks by becoming carbon neutral in 2010 – while setting verified carbon targets for 2020. It was the first tour operator to ban elephant rides back in 2014. It has pioneered initiatives such as vegan tours and gender diversity in leadership. And it has supported global communities through its own Intrepid Foundation, providing aid during the Nepal earthquake, the COVID-19 pandemic, and through various vaccine distribution efforts.

And with offices already in Melbourne, London, Colombo and Toronto, it’s now expanding its footprint into Northern Europe, by opening a new destination management company in Copenhagen. Yes, to paraphrase Danny Kaye in Hans Christian Anderson, Copenhagen is set to become even more wonderful, thanks to an injection of eco-conscious travel.

The move marks a real milestone for Intrepid, which is looking to increase its operational presence by opening six more offices in the region over the next five years – doubling its customer base in the region from 4,000 to 8,000 travellers. All the better to provide even more travellers with culturally rich experiences, while simultaneously helping the planet.

Leading the Copenhagen hub is Inga Rós Antoníusdóttir, appointed General Manager for Northern Europe in November 2024. Under her leadership, the team will focus on strengthening local partnerships and delivering unique, sustainable travel experiences.

Kristijan Švajnzger, Intrepid’s Regional General Manager East Europe, Nordic and Caucasus, said: “Opening a hub in Copenhagen marks a pivotal moment for Intrepid and reflects our strong confidence in the region. Northern Europe is seeing incredible growth, fuelled by the rise of ‘coolcations,’ growing interest in Nordic culture, breathtaking natural landscapes, and a strong commitment to sustainability.”

Added Zina Bencheikh, Intrepid’s Managing Director for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, “There is huge potential for Intrepid to grow in Europe, and expanding our country offices gives us an exciting opportunity to broaden our product range and purpose-driven activities in the region.”

Beyond Europe and Scandinavia, Intrepid’s also been strengthening its leadership team – recent appointments including Leigh Barnes as President of the Americas and Hazel McGuire as Chief Marketing Officer – in order to support its long-term goal of reaching 600,000 travellersby 2030.

Given Intrepid’s incredible track record, there’s every chance they’ll pull it off too.
